"You can't choose your intelligence sources. Might be another duelist, a disgraced cheater... or your little sister." -- Samuel "Axe" Campbell, on Scouting the Competition
Hologram technology is amazing, Michael thought to himself. It had been some times since the first proof of concept came out, but to do something this meticulously impressive, and on this big a scale, was something to marvel a bit about. And while the American had become well-acquainted with the weight of a Duel Disk on his right arm, the amount of things he could do with it was still a bit staggering. It wouldn't be long before Hard Light technology got implemented, where people could touch and hold the holograms instead of just watch and move them. And if done right, people would brush it off as it being an actual person and not just a trick of light and electronics. The line between the virtual and real was blurring, as was the vision of the young redhead trailing just behind the self-styled "Magician of Miami".
Technology was indeed amazing - but it would only last as long as he was able to stay in the tournament, and that meant winning duels. His name wasn't one that inspired fear in the hearts of his enemies - yet. But that might play to his advantage. Eventually, someone would pick a fight with him. Until then, the two would continue meandering about the park. Most people wouldn't realize the girl clipping through a few objects anyway.

Today was actually a pretty decent day to be outside, for once. Domino City was still overwhelming to the poor guy, but taking a few walks around the city to get used to the city made it help. Despite being born in the city, Nat was more of a suburbia guy; the city life didn’t really suit him. The crowded spaces, the loud people, all of it didn’t rub him the right way. His first year here was mostly uneventful, but it was probably due to the fact he had school work and personal projects as well as practicing duels, much to his annoyance.
If there was any better way to improve at playing the game and figuring out ideas for his stories, it was getting in the thick of it. Nathaniel heard it time and time again with some of his professors and even urged that he attend or at the very most participate in a dueling event. The thought of competing had him sick to his stomach, but he’d deal with it. Maybe he’d find someone who sucked, yeah. Nathaniel sighed, pulling his headphones up as he stood near one of the trees. He scribbled into the notepad he kept in his pocket, watching the people that wandered around. Some were either looking for their opponents, some were just walking around the park peacefully.
It was then that something caught his attention.
“The heck…is that real?” Nathaniel muttered to himself. His eyes gazed on someone walking across the park with a rather enchanting woman. Her long red hair seemed flawless as she walked alongside him. At first glance, Nat just thought it was a great looking costume right at the start. When he looked closer, he could have sworn the girl was glitching in and out and barely touching the ground. Maybe it was a hologram?
He was tempted to ask…But what if it was a trick of his eyes? He didn’t exactly want to go up and diss someone’s amazing costume just because he thought it was fake. “Come on Nat, you can do it…If anything just lie or continue on with your day.” He told himself. With a determined nod, the brown haired teen walked forward from his place under the tree, duel disk on his left wrist. He’d learned to never leave home without the thing since he had a lot of awkward times that someone challenged him and he left the dang thing at home.
“Umm…hi. I was wondering, is that a hologram, or a good looking costume, couldn’t help but notice, hah.” Nat chuckled, scratching the back of his head. He took a bit of a better look at the guy with her. He couldn’t pin his finger on it, but the guy seemed familiar or something.

It took a while of walking through the park before a voice caught Michael's attention - it was directed at him, the first one tonight as it were. The kid approaching him had short brown hair and had likely been listening to some music before the pair had caught his eye. The way he spoke made it clear he'd spent more time here than Michael had, but the still somewhat stilted Japanese made it clear this wasn't his native language. Given how choppy he himself was, switching to a more familiar tongue would be greatly appreciated.
"It actually was a hologram - you've a good eye. First person to even notice the collision detection's not exactly working that well." Michael smiles a bit, sitting down on a bench as the dancer's image vanishes. It would be a huge hurdle in hologram technology, getting them to recognize when the image intersects with any other solid object must take a colossal amount of R&D to solve - it was one of the bigger hurdles, but for what the tech was used for it rarely mattered.
"The name's Michael. You interested in a match, or were you busy?" On one hand, challenging the first person you see with a duel disk might not be the best way to stay alive in the competition. On the other hand, he had to duel someone every so often to remain eligible, and the kid in front of him certainly was a duelist.

Well, that turned out better than expected. It seemed Nat lucked out by running into someone that spoke his language as well! Domino was home to a plethora of international people, so running into someone that presumably spoke English was great. After he started speaking, Nat let out a sigh of relief. At the sight of a possible friend, Nat seemed to relax quite well. His stance loosened with a smile on his face. And it looked like he was right, the rather beautiful girl in front of him was a hologram. He couldn’t figure out why he was wandering around with one, actually. Maybe he was bored?
Oh well, wasn’t his business. Nathaniel nodded in response, coughing a bit. Switching languages on the fly wasn’t that easy for him just yet. Even with taking language classes on the side and being in Japan for a year, it was taking him a good while to figure out complicated sentences. Thankfully, most of the people he’d run into were bilingual.
The man introduced himself as Michael. Again, he could have sworn that he’d heard the name somewhere, but the memory was taunting him. Oh well, it’d come back at some point. At the mention of a duel, Nat seemed to lock up a bit. He looked around nervously, a small frown on his face. He wasn’t exactly planning on dueling, but after confronting a random stranger on the street, it was the least he could do, no?
“Uh, sure.” He scratched the back of his head in response. “I don’t think I’m all that good since I’m mostly here as a writer, but may as well practice, haha.”

"Even the pros were just starting out at one point - nothing wrong with learning as you go." Whoever this kid was, (He didn't give a name, Michael should ask about that.) he didn't exactly exude confidence. But at the same time if you bring a duel disk into a city holding a public tournament, you have to expect to get a challenge every now and again. It's wasn't long before the two of them faced each other, twenty paces apart as the crowd gave them a wide enough berth to play. A few seemed interested in the duel, but to call it a crowd would be a bit generous.
As Michael looked over his hand, he couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed to have bricked - no good plays to make, and no good way to set up a play later. He'd need to get some good draws, but until then he'd be forced to stay on the defensive.
"I'll set one card face-down and pass the turn." It was not the best move, but there weren't any better ones available. Hopefully his opponent wouldn't be able to punish too badly for that poor opening.
