The first day of the Tournament was filled with Christmas splendor. There wasn’t a single cloud in the sky however. The temperature was still fairly cold though despite the sunshine. Domino City’s Hologram Caster was creating sprinkling snow to fall over the city in a beautiful and gentle flurry. The city’s streets were filled with both Christmas decorations and Duel Monster posters and items. The bizarre mixture was complimented by images of Duel Monsters soaring high above the heads of the spectators below, all of them wearing Christmas hats.
In a large square within City Central, stage was set up. The stage was empty for the most part, with the exception of a round orb on the center. All around the stage were various Christmas and Duel Monster themed decorations. A crowd was gathering around it was well. Today was the start of the tournament. Suddenly, at noon exactly, the orb would light up. The entire orb was a giant disco ball like contraption. From its light, a hologram busted forward in a rain of stars and glitter, floating above the stage as pop music played distantly in the background, giving her upbeat movements rhythm.
”WELCOME FOREIGN DUELISTS~” she’d begin. The hologram was of the ever popular Dark Magician Girl. As the music played in the back, fading enough so that everyone could hear the hologram’s voice while also adding energy to the event. ”I’ve been summoned to come help all you duelists in the tournament! Domino City is ecstatic to welcome all of you to our fair city! she cheered happily, spinning in the air. The girl would float over the audience like a fairy. ”All the registered duelists will have been given a goodie bag with the rulebook, their hotel information, special duel disks and their very own Domino City spending card!”
As she spoke, dozens upon hundreds of small tiles appeared behind her in the sky. Every tile had the face of a registered duelist. ”With over ten thousand duelists registered, the Domino City’s New Year tournament is now the largest in the history of Duel Monsters!” she cheered, raising her hands to the air. ”Remember to work hard and give us a good show duelists! You will all have access to the city’s main caster only during duels! Use this to show off your decks and skills!”
Bouncing across the stage, she clapped her hands. ”Now! I’ll be drawing the names of two duelists! They’ll be doing the first duel of the tournament and officially kicking off the events!” As she spoke, the blocks behind her began to blink in various colors, some fading out in darkness and vanishing slowly. ”Once the two duelists are picked from the list above, we’ll start!”

"My, my, my." I breathed, taking in the spectacle before me. They'd put on quite the show, demonstrating the technology that was making the city famous. I adjusted my parasol on my shoulder, despite the snow being nothing but a hologram. It was enough to get even me excited, as above such things as I was. I wondered what Saleen would make of it... Though come to think of it, I hadn't seen her in quite a while. Probably causing trouble somewhere, I thought, sighing. Such an uncouth girl. Still, it would be a shame if she missed this, particularly when they were kicking the event off with a duel. The chances of being chosen were low, given the extraordinary amount of competitors, but were I chosen I would certainly open the tournament with style!
As the selection continued, I took a moment to rummage in my handbag, producing the 'gifts' participants had been given. A hotel card and what seemed to be a credit card. Oh, I did hope we would be allowed to use our own money too, my expensive tastes would hardly be covered by whatever they provided! The rule book I mostly ignored, I was a professional after all. The duel disk was undoubtedly handy, but it did rather lack style... Perhaps I could add some flowers, maybe a ribbon or two? Still, time for all of that later. I returned the items to my bag, and my eyes to the scene. Dark Magician Girl was a charming touch, ever popular, and she was certainly performing well, people were quite visibly excited.
"Make sure to put on a show now, dears." I said to myself, a small, smug smile, quite ready for the world's biggest tournament to begin.

The caster seems to be working fine for its first live run Jishin thought, glancing about at the monsters flying through the sky, as well as the snow flurries dropping down. I thought the weather patterns still had a few bugs to iron out, but I guess they found a solution. A quick look into his grab bag showed that the duel disk wasn’t included, good. It wouldn’t be a good test of the duel arm if I didn’t use it after all. I wonder who is going to start out this tournament. There’s still a bit of time before the duelists are going to be announced. A quick glance through his deck revealed everything was in order. Picking out an empty spot on along one of the walls, Jishin leaned upon it to wait. Might as well use this time to run some diagnostics on my duel arm. Wouldn’t want it to cause any problems on the first duel. Jishin smirked, running the diagnostic program.

Welcome to Domino City! My name is Yuko, and I'll be dueling you today!

This was certainly a spectacle. Glancing up, Yuko stared at the snow with wide eyes as she waited in the crowd. The snow looked so real… How did they manage to do that? Tugging on her white coat, Yuko smiled widely. It was so cold, one could almost believe the snow was real! Still, as it landed on people, it’d go through their hands, appearing over the other side. All the snow would pile on the floor, giving the illusion of an inch of snow or so. This was really amazing. Yuko had been in Domino for most of her life, but today was the first time they used the hologram Caster to this extent. Beaming, the girl watched the stage as the magician girl appeared and began to speak.
She loved that hologram. Yuko clasped her hands together as she clapped along with other members of the crowd. Dark Magician Girl was practically an idol right now. Yuko’s goody bag hung on her arm as she clapped along with the music. As the icons appeared, Yuko gulped. She hoped that her name wasn’t drawn. Her father had let her enter the duel tournament as a publicity stunt, but she didn’t want to appear too soon. To be frank, the girl was still fairly nervous about it all.

◄ HAVEN'T YOU HEARD WHAT BECOMES OF CURIOUS MINDS? A palpable sense of excitement, and anticipation was felt amongst the crowd gathering around the stage. The grand light radiating from the disco ball placed at it's center brought droves of people towards it like moths to a flame, and their attentions were kept by the appearance by the popular Dark Magician Girl that appeared.
Standing within the crowd, a peculiar male in a blue tracksuit, and red mask on his face stood in awe at the events transpiring before him. The bizarre man known as "Mr. Hero" stood with a wide smile lining his excited face. It was the onset of a spectacular adventure he knew, his "Hero's intuition" made him feel sure of it.
"Me! Pick Me!" He shouted with enthusiasm, hopping up, and down with hands outstretched above his head. At hearing that there would be a drawing for who would be the first pair to have a duel to start off the tournament, Mr. Hero couldn't control eagerness even if he tried. "Please let it be me!" He hollered once more, clasping his hands together as he made a silent prayer that lady luck smiled on him, and his name would be one of the contestants.

It was beautiful. The words could not go over enough times in his mind. The cold was nothing in his mind as he would stare at the snow, holding his hands out in what would look like an attempt to let a flake or two land in his palm. They would...amd then go right through to the other side and follow to the ground. He didn't know the science behind the holograms and to be honest, he didn't want to. It made it more like magic than science and it made things all that more exciting.
The boy would look around, bringing a hand back to his face to adjust his glassess. The stadium was packed and with good reason. The music filled the air and it was something he wanted to remember so he could try and find it later. That was all pushed aside as Dark Magician Girl appeared, greeting everyone and speaking of a bag that was slung over his shoulder. His deck box was in his pocket and he would move it to feel the weight of the cards inside to reassure himself. Then he saw it and he was soon at a loss.
There were a lot of people in the city that were participating and it was starting to make him a bit light headed. What made it even worse was when the pictures began to dwindel down, two would remain and would be the first duelests to show what they had. Lee could not stop shaking, from excitment or cold, only he knew.

The tiles above the head of the blond hologram continued to blip and boop as they continued to shift colors. More and more duelists were being erased from the list above. As they continued, she spoke once more. ”Alright! We’ll be having our two duelists soon! I’ll use this time to announce some rules and special treats!” she cheered, raising her hands over her head with excitement. She was programmed to act is everything was the most exciting thing she’s ever done. Every bit of her moved with excitement and energy. Even the audience was getting caught up in her digital ambience.
”Every week we’ll be announcing the rankings of the duelists based off their duels and results! The top duelists every week will get special prizes and permits! So remember, duel as often as you can! Rankings are based off how often you duel and how much skill you show!” she continued, pointing up to the sky. By now the tiles were almost all gone. Only a couple dozen were there. These two dozen grew larger, the faces now filling the sky in detail. ”Look! We’re almost do our opening duelists!” she shouted. After a few more moments, only two images remained. These two blocks would be blown up.
”The winners are Penelope Pine and Daimonji Kujo! How exciting!” she chirped, clapping her hands. The icons showed a man with wide eyes and messy black hair while the other one showed a girl with long straight black hair and large glasses. ”Will both our winners please approach the stand and prepare to duel!? Once you're up here, feel free to get things started!”

So, she was chosen. Penelope looked up from her phone, her glasses hiding her eyes as the light reflected across her face. She wore a white hooded jacket with a soft lavender interior that was covered in white dots. Her legs were covered in a knee length black skirt. Under that she wore light lavender tights and some white fuzzy boots. Her hair was straight and black. Her frayed bangs hung straight over her face, and her hair hung down from the openings of her hood. Large oval glasses rested on her nose as her purple eyes glanced out towards the crowd. She seemed rather passive, only looking nervous and nothing else. The girl, overall, was mousy. She certainly didn’t look too threatening or imposing. In fact, it looked as if she would faint from all the attention.
Slowly, she made her way through the crowd, sliding on her duel disk and snapping her deck in. She would climb the steps to the stage and wait for the other to show up so they could start.

we all hide behind masks Kujo silently stood among the crowd of wide-eyed spectators with a scrooge-like frown on his face. He disliked the Christmas holiday simply due to the unnatural cheeriness that seemed to envelope over people, but his feelings did not stop him from coming down to the large stage in City Central to participate in today’s Tournament. He didn’t talk much, nor did he actively interact with others. Instead, Kujo simply wanted a challenge, as his opponents as of late were boring. Newcomers and veterans of the like were far too spineless. He couldn’t feel ecstasy facing them, nor could he feel any sort of excitement from watching their face cringe from their defeat. These days, everyone would forfeit far too early in the game.
Awaiting his turn to participate, Kujo’s frown grew wider and wider, eventually showing his teeth grinding together in anticipation. Finally, the Dark Magician Girl cosplayer called for him and in an instance his deep frown turned into an almost twisted innocent smile due to his large, wide eyes. Pushing aside the crowd, Kujo finally stepped forward onto the stairs, with a creepy chuckle of delight. ”Hee, hee.” He stared at the girl across from him with his bulging large eyes as he slipped on his Duel Disk. ”Don’t be too much of a disappointment now.” he would say casually.

She stared at him, lowering her head silently. He was a professional duelist right? As she shuffled her deck, her eyes remained hidden by her classes. Despite her seeming case of stage fright, she didn’t seem too concerned with him. Tugging at her hoodie, she sighed. Why was she chosen for this? The girl’s face wouldn’t look familiar at all to anyone. Any searches of her name wouldn’t bring up anything either. She was a complete and utter nobody. So, when the duel began, nobody knew what to expect from the mousy looking girl.
The first thing she did was summon four sheep tokens using the Scapegoat card. She was already putting on a solid defense. The girl seemed to dance around his attacks and attempts at hitting her life points. Over the next few turns, something became clear: she was stalling for something. Every turn she’d dodge his monsters and attacks by summoning various attack blockers such as battle faders and Kuribohs. What exactly was she stalling for!? Half way into the duel, it became clear: Final Countdown. Even after activating her card, which seemed like the total point of the deck, her expression didn’t change from one of gentle concern.
Around the fourteenth turn, she would lay down once face down despite having more cards in her hand. Silently, the girl could watch as the card was bounced back into her hand, leaving her friend blank. The next turn, Kujo’s assembly of summoned monsters would charge the girl’s side of the field. The large holograms that floated overhead rushed the girl, dwarfing her in size. Her life points quickly dropped to 0. Once the duel ended, the crowd let out a cheer, excited for the opening ceremony of the duel having ended. Silently, Penelope would approach the man, her last hand still clutched gently in her grasp. With her free hand, she reached out for a handshake. Her purple eyes glanced up at the man. He was much taller than her. If he looked to her other hand, he’d notice several cards: Day of Peace, Swift Scarecrow, Battle Fader, Winged Kuriboh and Rainbow life.

we all hide behind masks His large eyes fixated on the timid looking girl while his gleeful demeanor and grin tempered back into a calm, yet curious look. The sensation of his excitement immediately died down when he noticed that despite how she seemed to hide herself away she didn’t seem frightful of him. He clicked his tongue together as he drew his five cards. A terrible hand, he thought. To start the duel, Kujo immediately began to set his cards face down in the spell and trap zone until he only had one card left in his hand. His eyes briefly glanced away to the girl and onto the single Allure of Darkness that sat in his hand. With his interest already wavered, Kujo toyed with chance, activating it. In the end things worked well for him as he drew Summoner Monk and Armageddon Knight, the latter of which he would promptly banish from the duel.
Summoning Armageddon Knight onto the field, Kujo would activate its effect to send Destiny Hero Malicious into the graveyard before ending his turn. From then on the duel would swiftly pass through its turns as the girl quickly began to stall him out with her scapegoats. On his second turn, Kujo activated Malicious’s effect to special summon a copy of itself from his deck to which he would then chain Emergency Teleport with to bring out Krebons. Rather than using his typical tactic of summoning his key card, Kujo would summon Crimson Blader instead. He attacked before ending his turn.
From then on the game would slowly commence itself. Kujo would attack and summon his monsters, the girl would respond with some sort of stall card such as Threatening Roar or Battle Fader. Around the half-way mark of the duel, the girl finally revealed her true reasoning for stalling: Final Countdown. Unfazed by the thought of losing to such a gimmick, Kujo continued on with his attacks, eventually whittling away her defenses, leaving her with only a single face down card. On the fifteenth turn, he would activate his trap card, sending her unknown monster back to the deck which allowed him to drop her life points down to 0 with his attacks.
Not amused by the duel, the tall and slender male prepared to exit the stage until the girl approached him, still clutching her unused cards in her hand. Knowing what she had as available resources, he tightly grabbed her wrist. This bitch. he thought. The excitement he previously had suddenly came back, rushing from his spine and to his neck. His tight grasp over the girl loosened as he pulled her hands up towards his chest. ”Hey, hey. I want to duel you again sometime, okay?” he shared with a delighted smile on his face. The thought of being toyed with sent chills down to his spine and rekindled his interests in the girl.

Post by Louise Caroline on Dec 23, 2014 5:39:33 GMT -6
Louise outstretched her hand, her hand closing around the holographic snow. She had to admit, she was a little taken aback by the way they incorporated the holographic technology. Sure, this technology existed her birthplace, Silvershine city. The thing was thought, it was completely monopolized by the big name dueling companies and institutions, who then passed it along to the pro league when they handed out sponsorship to jump start a pro duelists career. Here though, it seemed much more open then normal. Granted, this was literally a once in a lifetime event, so this wasn't likely the norm in all likelihood.
Clutching her teddy bear close to her body with her left arm, Louise surveyed the crowd carefully, her head turning in all directions, save towards the arena. The duel that had gone there completely bored her to no end. One of them ran a very standard turbo Synchro engine that had been done to death already, and the other one seemed content to just hide behind stall cards until she got the combo she needed. Unfortunately for her, things didn't turn out that way for the girl, as her opponent eventually overwhelmed her. Honestly, she didn't come all this way to see boring duels such as that: she needed something more exciting and unique.
As Louise wandered around, she ended up noticing a few choice people in the crowd. such as a man who appeared to be dressed as a superhero who had been begging to be picked first for the duel. He kinda looked like he had came straight from a convention and forgot to dress back in his normal clothes. He was definitely a little strange, and someone worth checking out later down the line. But was he the kind of duelist she was looking for right now? Louise shook her head, and continued to survey the crowd. No, she wanted her first opponent to be a little more down to earth then that guy. She wanted to know what she was getting into before tangling with the likes of a guy dressed in a costume that flashy.
"He's like a 5 year old trying to get attention. I know that you have to take a persona in order to appease the crowd, but there's a right way and there's a wrong way. And that's most certainly the wrong way. What an uncouth way of getting people to duel you. " And so Louise continued onward, looking through the area for a worthy opponent.

I raised one delicately arched eyebrow as the opening duel progressed. How unfortunate such a dull duelist had been picked! Her stalling techniques were ones most duelists were familiar with, designed merely to survive and drag out a duel, typically until the user drew into their combo pieces. Effective in some situations, but overall... mundane. Still, when she played Final Countdown her strategy became apparent, and it looked as if she had the duel all but won, her opponent unable to break through her stall tactics. Yet as was so often the case, it took merely one turn for it all to backfire, her lifepoints evaporated in one fell swoop. As people began to clap and cheer, not a duel worth applauding, in my opinion, my eyes narrowed, spying the cards in her hand. Such information was present on the display, the holograms, but not the cards themselves. Still with so many... Well, perhaps it was a dead hand.
My attention rather lost after watching such a duel, I scanned the crowd instead, still mildly apprehensive about Saleen's location, and her tendency to find trouble. At least she hadn't missed much. Everyone would likely be itching to duel after witnessing the opening battle, I was rather ready for it myself, truth be told. Still, it simply wouldn't do to rush into anything, I fancied browsing the shops and checking out the hotel before anything else, it was of paramount importance I stayed in luxury for the duration of the tournament!
Twirling my parasol on my shoulder absentmindedly, I looked back to the stage. If there was nothing else to announce, I supposed the games had begun...

The boy wearing the glasses would watch Dark Magician Girl and felt as if the energy she was emitting was contagious. The fear that was mixed with excitement was quickly being eclipsed by simply wanted to play. He would lean forward on the railing as the last two pictures left were not of him. He was no less excited as this meant plenty of good things but he began to look around for the two selected people among the crowd. He saw each of them, moving through the crowd, one more pushing people out of the way while the other tried their best not to touch to many people.
He watched as they entered the arena and it was going to start. He had never seen a battle with holograms in real life but this was going to change that. He was on his feet and holding onto the railing as if it was holding him back from jumping onto the stage himself. "This is so EXCITING!" He was almost to the point of squee'ing and he tightened his grip on the bar. The match began which scapegoats and if it was one thing he was good at, he knew cards. Names, effects, rarity, these were all things that made him all the happier.
Her defense was solid as it seemed she was waiting for something, a win condition? Yes, Final countdown came along in all due time but his strategy was one that he knew too. If she could hold out, she could pull out a win but as the game moved on, that twenty-th turn seemed to crawl further and further away. The duel ended with a win on the male's side which caused the glasses wearing boy to begin clapping as loudly as he could, they both kept going and didn't give up and that is what he thought dueling was really about though he did wish they would have been a bit more enthusiastic but to each their own.

Jishin stood silently watching the duels, observing the caster’s holograms as it went through the motions of the duel. No real errors were visible, but then again, it wasn’t a very intensive duel. A stall deck doesn’t cause for very impressive holograms after all. Kujo made a strong early showing as per usual, and reduced his opponent’s life points to zero before final countdown could lose him the duel. Still, the ending to that duel. She had that many cards in her hand, but did nothing to stop the attacks.
There’s quite a few possibilities. She could be sandbagging, appearing weaker so that people will challenge and underestimate her, letting her racking up wins early on in the tournament. She could also be running a hybrid deck, with exodia as a win condition as well. Standing away from the wall he was leaning on, Jishin rolled his right shoulder, getting the kinks out of it. Regardless, it is safe to assume that her deck is not quite as it appears. With the duel over, no doubt people will be looking for people to duel. Best to be prepared. With that thought, he activated my duel arm, causing it to shift into the characteristic duel disk shape with a characteristic SCHWING. Now let's see if anyone else is ready to duel.
